100 per cent Islamic country status will end if Chagos Islands become part of our country: Umar Naseer

Former Home Minister Umar Naseer has said that the Maldives will end its status as a 100 per cent Muslim country if Chagos Islands become part of the Maldives. 

Speaking at a ceremony held by his political movement to mark Victory Day,  Umar Nasheed stated that there is something important to keep in mind when the country's political leaders speak on the issue. Umar explained that were around 3,000 people from Chagos Islands who will return once becomes independent and these people are non-Muslim. He further when on to explain that the 100% Muslim status would end. 

Once Chagos Island is liberated, and comes under either Mauritius or the Maldives, those 3,000 people in the UK will return to the islands. They are non-muslims. Will we become a 100 per cent Muslim country if they become our local people? No

Speaking at the event, Umar stated that the Government of the Maldives had changed its position on the issue of Chagos Island at the request of India. 

Umar said there are many sources of information on these issues, but the most important is the fact that these issues are not covered by the UN Security Council. He accused India of giving the Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid the post of UN Security Council presidency and loans to the Maldives as a means to control Maldive's foreign policy according to India's wishes. 

Although, Former Home Minister Umar Naseer has expressed his views on the Chagos Island case. The Maldives government has decided to vote in favour of Mauritius.

Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has said that Maldivians are the real beneficiaries of the Chagos Islands. President Nasheed said that the locals were fishing on the Chagos Island years ago, especially the Fuvahmulah people.

Nasheed stated that at a time when the British are planning to withdraw from the Chagos Ridge, Diego Garcia and several other provinces of the Chagos Islands the sovereignty may fall under Mauritius, However, the connection and closeness will remain with the Maldivians.
