The Government of Japan has formally delivered an emergency support vehicle and dewatering equipment to the Maldivian Red Crescent as part of the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) program.

During a ceremony in Kulhudhuffushi City on Sunday, the equipment was handed over by Her Excellency Mrs. Takeuchi Midori, the Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, to Ms. Fathimath Himya, Secretary General of the Maldivian Red Crescent.

This handover follows the signing of a grant contract on February 9, 2023, between the Embassy of Japan in Maldives and the Maldivian Red Crescent.

The grant, totaling USD 40,569, was allocated for procuring the emergency vehicle and dewatering equipment for the Maldivian Red Crescent Kulhudhuffushi City Unit.

The new vehicle will be used for emergency evacuations and transporting essential items during disasters, while the dewatering pump and hoses will enhance the unit's flood response capabilities.

This donation aims to improve the ability of the Maldivian Red Crescent's Emergency Response Team to manage flood incidents effectively and safely, complementing their ongoing efforts to strengthen community resilience against emergencies.

The GGP is a component of Japan's Official Development Assistance (ODA) provided by the Embassy of Japan in Maldives. Since 1996, the GGP has supported various sectors such as education, environment, health, transportation, and energy, contributing to the sustainable development of the Maldives.
