On the occasion of the 19th anniversary of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the party's president, Abdulla Shahid, shared a message on social media platform X, expressing optimism and determination for the future.

He further wrote that MDP stands as the beacon of hope for the Maldivian people, fostering a vigilant and competitive political system that ensures a safe balance across social, economic, and political realms in the Maldives.
Shahid emphasized the party's commitment to a green economy with equal opportunities for all, fostering an environmentally friendly lifestyle that will benefit future generations.
He stressed the importance of upholding the values of Islam and modern democratic principles throughout the state.

He further stated that not every option is appropriate for Maldivians, nor is every option fitting for MDP.
He ended his message by extending his best wishes to all members of the party on this joyous occasion.
Several other leaders also took to social media to congratulate MDP on its 19th anniversary, including President Dr. Muizzu and former president and former MDP leader Mohamed Nasheed.
The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) was established in exile in Colombo, Sri Lanka in November 2003, marking its inception with the endorsement of 42 founding members and the establishment of party structures nationwide.
The MDP emerged as a pivotal force in the Maldives' pro-democracy movement.
In January 2005, individuals openly affiliated with the MDP contested Parliamentary elections for the first time, coinciding with the enactment of legislation permitting political party registration in June 2005.
Following a sit-in by party members at the Home Ministry, the MDP was formally recognized on June 23, 2005, as the Maldives’ inaugural political party.
Since its founding, the MDP has seen leadership transitions, including Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, with Abdullah Shahid currently serving as president and Fayyaz Ibrahim as chairperson.
