In a recent statement, Ahmed Azaan, Member of Parliament for Central Hithadhoo Constituency, emphasized the enduring alliance between India and the Maldives.

In a post on social media platform X, Azaan declared,

India remains our closest neighbor and steadfast ally. Under President Dr. Muizzu's leadership, we're demonstrating that strong bilateral relations can flourish while preserving our sovereignty and independence.

Azaan stated

Currently, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is visiting India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been sworn in for a third consecutive term.

This marks President Muizzu's first visit to India since taking office on November 17 last year.

Previously, bilateral ties between the Maldives and India had experienced some tension.

The strain was attributed to requests for the removal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives and controversial remarks made by three deputy ministers about Prime Minister Modi.

The Maldives government responded swiftly by suspending the deputy ministers involved.

Despite these challenges, recent developments indicate a positive trajectory in India-Maldives relations.

One notable example is India's extension of a USD 50 million loan repayment period by one year, reflecting the streng thening ties between the two nations.

President Dr Muizzu's visit is expected to further solidify the relationship, demonstrating mutual commitment to collaboration while respecting each nation's sovereignty.
