Maldives Reiterates Request for Visa-Free Travel for Maldivian Nationals to Schengen Area

The Maldivian government has once again asked the EU to soon lift the requirement for Schengen visas for its residents during the third meeting of senior officials from the Maldives and the European Union, which was held on October 25 in Malé, Maldives.

According to a press release released by the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the meeting, the Maldivian representatives present at the meeting requested the EU representatives and reminded them of the significance of fortifying connections between the two sides.

“Recalling the importance of enhancing people-to-people ties between the two sides, the Maldives also reiterated its request for visa-free travel for Maldivian nationals to travel to EU Member States,” .

The press statement reads

The EU representatives in attendance praised the Maldivian government's commitment to strengthening democratic governance, bolstering the rule of law, combating corruption, promoting and protecting human rights, and enacting changes in the justice system.

Minister Shahid thanked the EU for its ongoing assistance to the Maldives, especially in the nation's efforts to recover economically. He also reiterated to Director Pampaloni the interest of the Maldives to be added to the list of nations whose citizens are not required to obtain a visa to enter the Schengen area.

Also present at the meeting were Joint Secretary Shiuneen Rasheed, Secretary Bilateral Dr Hala Hameed, and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel. However, no response has been made. 

The Maldives passport is the most powerful passport in South Asia, according to the Henley Passport Index rankings for 2022, as it allows its holders to travel to 89 international locations without the need for a visa.
