Maldives has welcomed a joint announcement by 12 countries expressing support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The countries supporting the position include the United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

In a statement, the Maldivian government said it welcomed the countries' opposition to measures that could lead to the annexation of Palestinian territory or the forced displacement of Palestinians.

The Maldives said the announcement demonstrated renewed international momentum toward achieving peace and stability in the region, while reflecting broader support for protecting the rights, security and dignity of the Palestinian people.

The government also reiterated its opposition to the continued expansion of Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, maintaining that such developments undermine efforts to achieve a lasting political settlement.

The Maldives reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and other legitimate national rights.

It also reiterated its support for the creation of an independent, sovereign and viable State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem serving as its capital.

The Maldivian position comes as international efforts continue to build support for a two-state framework, which envisions the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel as part of a lasting resolution to the conflict.
