Two MACL staff arrested for facilitating drug smuggling at Velana International Airport
In a concerning development, two employees of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) have been apprehended for their alleged involvement in facilitating the transportation of over 4.5 kg of drugs through Velana International Airport.
According to police reports, the illicit substances, identified as heroin and methamphetamine, were intercepted in luggage being transported out of the airport, contrary to established guidelines.
The arrests came following a dedicated media briefing held on March 15, where authorities disclosed details of the operation.
Among those detained were one Pakistani individual, a person attempting to claim the luggage, and two MACL staff members.
Notably, one of the MACL employees, described as a senior figure, was subsequently released by the Criminal Court despite being considered a key perpetrator in the case.
Police spokesperson Ahmed Shifan confirmed that while investigations are ongoing, the release of the senior MACL staff member was subject to certain conditions, despite evidence linking him to the incident.
Shifan emphasized that the matter is being thoroughly investigated, with suspicions extending beyond the two individuals currently highlighted.
In response to the incident, authorities have intensified collaborative efforts to combat the influx and distribution of illegal drugs and narcotics within the country.
Special operations have been initiated to address the issue and prevent further instances of drug smuggling.
The case underscores the gravity of the situation and the concerted efforts required to safeguard against such criminal activities.
