The China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has commenced the Sinamale’ Bridge maintenance project, with physical work starting on Saturday.

This initiative follows the signing of the Implementation Agreement on China-Maldives Friendship Bridge Maintenance Works on March 20, 2024, outlining a three-year maintenance plan.

Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, the Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, represented the Maldivian government in signing the agreement, while Ambassador Wang Lixin signed on behalf of the Chinese government.

This project is part of the bilateral agreement outlined in the Letter of Exchange and Economic and Technical Cooperation between the two nations. It is estimated that approximately 26,150,000.00 Chinese yuan or USD 3.6 million will be allocated for this endeavor.

The agreement encompasses various tasks, including initial repairs, identifying and addressing existing issues, preventive maintenance, and establishing a system to document maintenance activities.

Furthermore, routine maintenance duties will be conducted to identify and rectify any required repairs.

As part of capacity-building efforts, local technicians will receive training in bridge and road engineering, electro-mechanical systems, traffic safety, facility landscaping, and bridge maintenance.

The aim is to equip Maldivians with the necessary skills to undertake maintenance work independently by the conclusion of the agreement period of three years.

Following the signing of the Implementation Agreement on China-Maldives Friendship Bridge Maintenance Works on March 20, 2024, outlining a three-year maintenance plan, this initiative has been initiated.

It includes monthly, semi-annual, and annual maintenance works.

Minister Muththalib noted that maintenance was previously carried out for two years after the bridge's completion in 2018 but was halted due to the lack of a renewed agreement.

This maintenance endeavor is part of China's aid to Maldives.

Ultimately, this initiative seeks to ensure the efficient upkeep of the Sinamale’ Bridge, enhancing its longevity and safety for all users.
