Solih warns of impending arrests of political leaders amidst growing tensions
Former President and current advisor of the opposition party, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has expressed concerns over what he perceives as a growing trend of political persecution by the current administration.
Speaking at a campaign rally last night for the upcoming parliament elections , Solih accused the government of attempting to regress the country by two decades and creating an environment of unfairness that puts jobs at risk.
Solih's remarks come in the wake of the summoning of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail by the police for questioning regarding alleged profiteering from corruption within the Road Development Corporation (RDC).
Solih condemned the summoning as an attack on political leaders, citing it as an example of baseless accusations aimed at undermining opposition figures.
It's becoming extremely scary. It's impossible to carry out political activities. They are getting ready to arrest political leaders
Expressing alarm at the situation, Solih stated
He further warned that the targeting of political leaders could escalate to include judges, police commissioners, and the suppression of public associations.
Drawing parallels to past political turmoil, Solih cautioned against allowing the situation to deteriorate further, urging unity in addressing the challenges faced.
It's starting to feel like the same situation the country was in 10 years back
he remarked
emphasizing the need for collective action to prevent a return to past hardships.
