In a promising start to the year, the Maldives has witnessed a remarkable 12 percent increase in tourist arrivals compared to the same period last year.

According to statistics released by the Tourism Ministry, a total of 174,000 tourists have visited the Maldives so far this year, averaging 6,200 arrivals every day.

Last year, by the end of January, the figure stood at 155,000, indicating an impressive surge of 20,000 more visitors this year.

Notably, the daily average demonstrates a consistent and robust flow of tourists, underscoring the Maldives' allure as a preferred travel destination.

While there have been alterations in the countries leading in tourist numbers, Russia maintains its dominance, securing the top spot with 18,500 tourists.

However, India, which held the second position last year, has slipped to fifth place, with 13,900 visitors - a decrease of 3,000 compared to the previous year.

Despite the decline in Indian tourists, there has been a surge in arrivals from Italy, England, Germany, France, and Switzerland.

Italy, in particular, claimed the second position with 18,000 visitors, showcasing a noteworthy increase of 4,000 from the previous year.

China follows closely in the third spot, contributing 16,000 tourists, a remarkable ascent from last year when it held the eighth position.

England secured the fourth position with 14,500 visitors, maintaining its standing from the previous year but experiencing a significant 10 percent increase in tourist numbers.

The government's ambitious target is to welcome 2 million tourists this year.

With an average of 166,000 visitors per month, a goal appears within reach, reflecting the continued appeal of the Maldives as a sought-after destination for global travelers.
