President Dr. Muizzu returns after UK visit, bolsters Maldives–UK partnership

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned to Malé after concluding an official visit to the United Kingdom, aimed at deepening Maldives–UK ties and commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations.

During the visit, President Dr. Muizzu held discussions with key British officials, including Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle and Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

Talks focused on cooperation in climate adaptation, renewable energy, education, fisheries, sustainable tourism, and justice sector reform.

President was also granted a private audience with King Charles III at Windsor Castle, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the enduring partnership between the two nations.

At the House of Lords, the President engaged with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Maldives, where he thanked the UK for its ongoing support and highlighted the Maldives’ development priorities, particularly in areas of climate action, democratic consolidation, and defence cooperation.

Additionally, President Dr. Muizzu met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to discuss collaboration on democracy, governance, trade, and sustainable development.

The President outlined the Maldives’ ambition to achieve developed country status by 2040 and its leadership role among Small Island Developing States.

In London, President attended the Maldives–UK Business Forum, where he promoted investment opportunities in the creative economy, digital transformation, renewable energy, fisheries, and tourism.

The forum featured the launch of the Maldives’ fisheries promotion brand, From Maldives, to elevate the global profile of Maldivian seafood.

A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between the West London Chambers of Commerce and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to enhance business cooperation.

This visit marks a significant step in reinforcing diplomatic, economic, and multilateral ties between the Maldives, the UK, and the Commonwealth.
