Azim elected as the Mayor of Male City
The opposition MDP candidate Adam Azim has won the Mayoral seat by a huge margin.
Azim won the mayoral seat with 7،621 votes in the election held today to elect a mayor and members for the vacant seats in the Male city council. He got 44 percent of the vote.
Azim's closest competitor, PNC candidate Azima Shakoor, received 5031 votes, or 27 percent of the total votes.
Saif Fathih, who contested on behalf of The Democrats, got 2،343 votes. Former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed got 1,888 votes while independent candidate Shuaib Ali got 125 votes.
This year’s election for the vacant positions in the city council was attended by very few people. The Election Commission (EC) said only 40 percent of the eligible voters cast their ballots.
The seat of the Mayor of the city became vacant as president Dr.Mohammed Muizzu was elected as President of the Republic of Maldives. Three city council seats became vacant after the incumbents took up government positions.
