President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said the Maldives is prepared to assume a greater role in shaping the United Nations as the country marks 61 years since joining the international organization.

In a message commemorating the anniversary, President Dr. Muizzu reflected on the Maldives' six decades of participation in the UN, noting the country's transition from seeking international recognition and cooperation to taking on greater responsibilities within the organization.

The President reaffirmed the Maldives' support for reforming the UN and ensuring more equitable representation, particularly in advancing the interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

He said the Maldives would continue working through the UN system to ensure that SIDS have a meaningful role in discussions affecting the global economy, climate resilience and sustainable development.

Among the priorities highlighted by President Dr. Muizzu were stronger measures to address climate-related challenges, sustainable approaches to debt management, better access to affordable financing, including funding for climate adaptation, and greater opportunities for SIDS to strengthen their institutional and technical capacity.

President Dr. Muizzu also acknowledged the UN's contribution to the Maldives' development over the past 61 years, including its support during the country's transition out of Least Developed Country status.

He said the partnership with the UN remains important as the Maldives pursues its goal of achieving fully developed country status by 2040.

The President also pointed to the Maldives' expanding participation in the UN system.

The country has served as a vice president of the UN General Assembly and as a member of the Human Rights Council, while it is set to take up roles on the Commission on the Status of Women and the Economic and Social Council.

The Maldives is also seeking election to the Human Rights Council and the UN Security Council.

President Dr. Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives' support for international law and the principles of the UN Charter, emphasizing diplomacy, dialogue and inclusive multilateral cooperation as important tools for addressing increasingly complex global challenges.
