List of Sign-ups for The Democrats, disclosed; Points Finger at EC
The roster of individuals who have enrolled with "The Democrats" party, established under the leadership of Mohamed Nasheed, the president of the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) and his faction, has been disclosed, with allegations from the party suggesting that the leak originated from the Elections Commission (EC).
During a recent press conference held on behalf of The Democrats, Mohamed Shifaz, the former deputy leader of MDP, made a statement alleging that a list of members who registered with The Democrats had been leaked through the Elections Commission.
Furthermore, Shifaz revealed that they have received information suggesting that the leak was orchestrated by individuals within the current government who are opposed to the establishment of The Democrats. He further alleged that these leaked lists are being circulated among high-ranking government officials as well as regular political staff.
Shifaz also made the disturbing claim that following the leak of the list, the individuals whose names appeared on the lists received threatening phone calls from members of the government.
He expressed that there is information indicating that The Democrats did not provide certain details when submitting the forms to the Elections Commission, implying that the information was obtained through alternative means within the EC itself.
“When we filled the form, we were unaware of the current party affiliation of the individuals completing the forms. However, the Elections Commission would have access to that information. Unfortunately, all of this information has been leaked,"
Stated Shifaz.
Shifaz added that a formal request has been made to the police to investigate this matter thoroughly, and they have also filed a complaint with the Elections Commission to determine how such a breach occurred.
