Yesterday, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous nations have reached out to inquire about the measures implemented by Maldives in effectively addressing the health crisis.
President Solih, during the inaugural ceremony of Fenaka's new engine office in Faafu Atoll Bileddoo, expressed that the initiatives undertaken by Maldives during the COVID-19 period have served as a valuable lesson to neighboring nations.
He emphasized that the prudent decision to sustain the government's developmental projects without interruption has proven to be the most beneficial approach amidst the pandemic.
President Solih revealed that a Sri Lankan minister, grappling with an economic downturn and crisis, shared with him that their most significant error was suspending critical developmental projects amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
The president emphasized that Sri Lanka suffered considerable repercussions due to the closure of its borders and the subsequent halt in tourism, resulting in significant damage to their economy.
President Solih highlighted that in contrast to Sri Lanka, Maldives opted to maintain an open border and continued to welcome tourists, thereby safeguarding its economy from experiencing a similar level of distress. By adopting this approach, Maldives managed to mitigate the severity of the situation and avert a significant economic downturn.
President Solih mentioned that President Wavel Ramkalavan of Seychelles reached out to inquire about the Maldives' successful management of COVID-19. Despite Seychelles having a smaller population compared to the Maldives, they experienced higher mortality rates from the virus, prompting President Ramkalavan's call for insights into the Maldives' effective approach.
President Solih affirmed that during his tenure, a collective decision-making process has been adopted, wherein everyone's opinions are valued and thoroughly discussed. This inclusive approach has greatly facilitated the management of the COVID-19 situation in the Maldives, ensuring a more effective and coordinated response.
During a rally held for the MDP primary presidential elections campaign in Addu, Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid disclosed that leaders from various nations sought to uncover President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's strategy for effectively controlling the COVID-19 pandemic.
