The Government of Japan has pledged USD 10.5 million (approximately 1.56 billion Japanese Yen) to support the construction phase of the Seawall Renovation Project in Malé, under the “Project for Disaster Resilience Enhancement in Malé Island.”

An Exchange of Notes was signed today at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, and the Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Japan and Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ikuina Akiko.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Khaleel emphasized the historical and strategic importance of the seawall encircling Malé City, noting its construction in the aftermath of the 1987 tidal surges.

He highlighted the seawall’s role in shielding the capital from devastation during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and described it as a lasting symbol of Japan-Maldives friendship.

Dr. Khaleel also noted that today’s agreement reflects both countries’ shared commitment to disaster resilience and long-term partnership.

He reaffirmed the Maldives’ dedication to advancing maritime security, regional stability, and trade cooperation, especially as the Maldives marks 60 years of independence this year and approaches six decades of diplomatic relations with Japan in 2027.

The event was attended by Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, senior government officials, representatives from the Japanese Embassy in Malé, and officials from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
