President Dr. Muizzu thanks PM Modi, says visit will boost bilateral tourism
In an interview with Indian news channels, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu praised the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Maldives and expressed confidence in the growing strength of bilateral ties between the two nations.
President Dr. Muizzu described the Indian Prime Minister’s participation in the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations as a moment of pride and appreciation.
On behalf of all the Maldivians, I sincerely thank the Prime Minister for accepting my invitation to come to the Maldives,
he said
He acknowledged India’s enduring friendship with the island nation.
The President also spoke on the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two countries, including a USD 565 million line of credit offered by India for key development projects.
He noted the financial aid would play a vital role in supporting national priorities such as infrastructure, healthcare, education, and housing.
Definitely, it will greatly help the Maldives going forward,
he affirmed
Addressing future collaboration in fintech, President Dr. Muizzu welcomed the integration of Maldives’ instant payment system, Favara, with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), predicting smoother, more secure financial transactions and a boost to the tourism industry.
He highlighted that both Maldivians and Indians would benefit from easier payment systems and enhanced travel experiences.
He also praised India as one of the Maldives’ most important tourism partners.
On his personal impression of PM Modi, President Dr. Muizzu described him as a wonderful person and a leader deeply committed to building regional relationships and strengthening ties with neighbouring countries.
He reflected on the centuries old Maldives–India relationship and emphasized that under Modi’s leadership, the cooperation between the two governments would only continue to flourish.

Looking ahead, the President expressed his intention to visit India in the future and reiterated India’s historic and ongoing role in Maldives’ development.
