Mother and father to the Parliament's Speaker, Mohamed Nasheed, has signed for the new political party being formed under his leadership, "The Democrats".

Previously, the Parliament's Speaker and his family members belonged to the ruling party, MDP. However his family members and his supporters have begun signing for "The Democrats" with it's formation.

Despite his parents and his supporters signing for the party, Nasheed has yet to do the same and continues to remain as a leader for MDP.

The Democrats formed through "Fikuregge Dhirun" has recently announced that they would also be running for the upcoming presidential elections in September. 12 Parliament members have left MDP and joined the party along with several other supporters of Nasheed.

With the approval for formation given by the Election's Commission last Wednesday, the party has opened for people to sign up and collect the required 3000 signatures.
