The Supreme Court has issued a request for a temporary cessation of proceedings pertaining to allegations of corruption against the former President, Abdulla Yameen, in relation to the lease of R. Fuhgiri through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

The State has initiated legal proceedings against former President Yameen, alleging that he engaged in money laundering involving state funds with respect to the lease of R. Fuhgiri through the MMPRC. Prior to the commencement of the trial, the former president's evidence and explanation were dismissed, and the High Court rendered a verdict against him. Consequently, former President Yameen appealed the case to the Supreme Court.

Day before yesterday, the Supreme Court conducted the initial hearing, during which the legal representatives of former President Yameen requested a suspension of the criminal trial proceedings until the conclusion of the present case.

Following due deliberation and consideration of arguments presented by both parties, the three presiding judges issued an order to temporarily suspend the ongoing trial in the lower court. The President of the Bench, Husnu Al Suood, announced that the trial would remain suspended until the following Monday.

Judge Aisha Shujune and Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim were also part of the bench presiding over the aforementioned case alongside Husnu Al Suood.

Although the Supreme Court had ordered a suspension of the trial concerning R. Fuhgiri, a hearing was previously scheduled for tomorrow morning to collect witness testimonies in relation to the case.

On February 14th of the previous year, the High Court rendered a verdict against Former President Yameen, deeming his proposed application of shariah to be unacceptable.

Former President Yameen is facing charges of money laundering and bribery in connection with the R. Fuhgiri case.

In addition to Former President Yameen, Ahmed Kurik Riza and Sun Construction were also charged with money laundering and bribery in the R. Fuhgiri case. During the hearing held in the Supreme Court today, Kurik Riza's legal representatives also requested a postponement of the trial on his behalf.
