President calls for SIDS to be recognized as hubs of innovation and enterprise
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to be recognized not only for their climate vulnerabilities, but also for their potential as centers of innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic opportunity.
The President made the remarks as the chief guest at the opening of the SIDS Global Business Network Forum 2026 and the Island Investment Forum, being held in the Maldives from August 23 to 25.
President Dr. Muizzu said the story of small island nations extends beyond their vulnerabilities, highlighting their ability to adapt to limitations and transform challenges into opportunities.
He emphasized that the determination and resilience of island communities have helped create innovative solutions despite geographical and economic constraints.
He identified micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises as a major driving force behind SIDS economies, noting their role in developing practical solutions and creating new economic opportunities.
The President also highlighted the potential advantages of smaller economies, saying their scale can allow island nations to test new ideas, technologies, and business models more effectively.
Digital connectivity was identified as an increasingly important part of economic development, supporting sectors such as trade, financial services, tourism, and the creative economy.
Through the Maldives 2.0 agenda, the government aims to use digital transformation to overcome the challenges created by geography and limited scale.
President Dr. Muizzu also outlined several domestic initiatives, including targeted financing for startups and young entrepreneurs, with specific support for women-led businesses.
He further highlighted the modernized Foreign Investment Act, plans to establish a Trade Acceleration Zone by 2027, and investments in logistics and floating solar energy.
The President concluded by calling for the SIDS Global Business Network to become a key platform connecting promising island businesses and ideas with investors, technology, international partners, and new markets.
