Maldives Lost Territorial Waters After Giving Up Chagos Power: Former President Nasheed
Mohamed Nasheed, the former President and current Speaker of the Parliament, said that the Maldives lost some of its ocean territory because they gave up control over the Chagos islands. This was said in a tweet made by Nasheed.
"Due to the Maldives' decision to relinquish control over the Chagos Atolls, a portion of our country's territorial waters has been lost. I believe that not accepting this is in the best interest of the Maldives."

As per the border dispute case presented by Mauritius to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on the Maldives versus Chagos issue, neither nation is able to claim the full 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone. This has resulted in a 95,000-acre overlap of economically significant territory between the two countries.
In the hearing, ITLOS ruled that the 200 nautical mile area will be divided equally between Mauritius and the Maldives.
In this case, Mauritius argued for the border to be established at Blenheim Reef, while the Maldives advocated for the territorial waters’ border to be drawn from Peros Banhos and Salmon Islands.
Upon considering the arguments presented by both Mauritius and the Maldives, ITLOS found Mauritius' proposal to be unacceptable. The ITLOS chamber responsible for the case ruled that Mauritius did not furnish sufficient evidence to substantiate Blenheim Reef as a suitable base point for the delineation of the maritime boundary.
The ITLOS chamber ruled that the disputed area between the Maldives and Mauritius will be divided according to the Maldives' proposal, which involves measuring the sea area near Chagos with Peros Banhos and Salmon Islands as the starting point.
