Man sentenced to life in prison for diamorphine trafficking

A 28 year old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of trafficking diamorphine in Shaviyani Atoll.

The Shaviyani Maaungoodhoo Magistrate's Court identified the convicted man as Mohamed Fariq of Fehivilla, Maaungoodhoo.

He was sentenced under Section 105 of the Maldives' Drugs Act, which covers the trafficking of controlled substances.

The court's decision brings an end to a drug trafficking case that was initially filed in November 2020.

According to police, the case was subsequently investigated and completed before being submitted to the Prosecutor General's Office on January 6, 2021, for prosecution.

Fariq was sentenced to life imprisonment and additionally fined MVR 100,000 by the court.
