President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Ambassador Thoriq Ibrahim to serve as the Maldives' Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), with the appointment now awaiting parliamentary approval.

The nomination has been submitted to Parliament in line with constitutional requirements governing appointments to international organizations.

The matter has been referred to the Parliament's Foreign Relations Committee for review before it is presented for a vote on the parliamentary floor. The appointment will take effect once it receives majority approval.

Ambassador Thoriq currently serves as the Maldives' Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates.

Before assuming the diplomatic role, he served as Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy, gaining extensive experience in environmental policy, climate action, and renewable energy.

His nomination is expected to further strengthen the Maldives' engagement with international efforts to advance renewable energy and sustainable development.

Headquartered in Abu Dhabi, IRENA is an intergovernmental organization with 169 member states and the European Union.

The agency promotes the adoption and sustainable use of renewable energy worldwide while supporting countries in their transition to cleaner energy systems.

The Maldives has been a member of IRENA since the organization was established and has consistently advocated for renewable energy development, climate resilience, and sustainable solutions for small island developing states on the international stage.
