The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has reported 23 new measles cases over the past week, bringing the total number of confirmed infections in the Maldives to 144 since the current outbreak began.

According to the HPA, the latest figures indicate a decline in weekly infections, suggesting that response measures implemented following the detection of the first case are beginning to slow the spread of the disease.

Although the Maldives had previously achieved measles-free status, sporadic cases continue to occur.

Following the first confirmed case in the current outbreak, the HPA launched a comprehensive response in line with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, including active case detection, contact tracing, targeted vaccination of close contacts, and public awareness campaigns.

The agency said more than 7,100 people have now been vaccinated through a targeted immunization campaign aimed at individuals whose vaccination status was unknown or incomplete.

Health authorities continue to urge the public to seek immediate medical attention if they develop symptoms such as a red rash or other signs consistent with measles.

Individuals experiencing fever or flu-like symptoms are advised to wear a mask when visiting healthcare facilities or using public transportation, undergo testing if measles is suspected, and remain in isolation until test results are confirmed.

The HPA also reminded the public that measles is highly contagious and encouraged anyone experiencing symptoms to avoid crowded places to reduce the risk of further transmission.
