Maldives sees 5% decline in tourist arrivals despite 1 million milestone
Maldives has welcomed more than one million tourists so far this year, although visitor arrivals remain below last year's levels, according to the latest figures released by the Ministry of Tourism.
The country reached the one-million-visitor mark on June 20, later than it did in the previous year.
Overall arrivals are down 5% compared to the same period in 2025, with the Maldives currently receiving an average of about 5,700 tourists each day.
China remains the country's largest source market, accounting for 169,798 visitors, or 16.2% of total arrivals.
Most Chinese tourists stayed at resorts, while nearly one-third chose guesthouses.
Russia ranked second with 150,978 visitors, followed by the United Kingdom with 86,795, Italy with 74,049, and Germany with 67,379.
The ministry's data also shows that resorts continue to dominate the tourism sector, hosting 72% of all visitors, while 23% stayed in guesthouses.
Female travelers between the ages of 25 and 34 remain the largest visitor group.
The Maldives currently has 67,868 operational tourist beds across 1,297 tourism establishments.
The government is targeting 2.5 million tourist arrivals by the end of the year.
However, ongoing disruptions to global travel, including the impact of the conflict in the Middle East, have raised concerns about whether that goal can be achieved.
Despite the slower growth, the government has indicated that its immediate priority is to prevent overall tourist arrivals from falling below last year's total.
