The tourism industry continued to record growth during the first quarter of 2026, although expansion slowed compared with previous quarters, according to the latest Quarterly Business Survey released by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

The survey, based on feedback from businesses across different sectors of the economy, found that tourism activity remained positive despite a decline in several key performance indicators.

According to the report, the index measuring total revenue fell by 40 points but remained in positive territory at 60 points, indicating that businesses continued to generate higher earnings despite slower growth.

The resort bookings index also declined by 34 points to 56 points, reflecting continued increases in bookings at a more moderate pace.

Employment in the tourism sector also expanded during the quarter.

The employment index dropped by 37 points to 20 points but remained positive, suggesting that businesses continued to hire additional staff.

Wage and labour-related costs also increased, although the growth rate slowed, with the relevant index falling by 34 points to 28 points.

The survey showed that tourism operators continued to face rising operating costs.

The input prices index eased by five points to 67, while the average room rate index declined by 17 points to 73. Both indicators, however, remained at relatively high levels.

The MMA noted that global travel demand was affected by ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which also impacted the Maldives' tourism industry.

Despite these challenges, the survey indicated that the sector is gradually recovering and moving towards more stable conditions.

Meanwhile, statistics from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation show that tourist arrivals reached 981,976 as of 10 June.

While this represents a five percent decrease compared with the same period last year, arrivals remain four percent higher than the figures recorded during the corresponding period in 2024.

China continues to be the Maldives' largest source market, contributing more than 150,000 visitors so far this year.
