Hassan Zareer appointed Finance Minister following Moosa Zameer's resignation

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Hassan Zareer as the new Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises following the resignation of former minister Moosa Zameer due to health-related reasons.

The appointment was formalised during a ceremony held at the President’s Office, where President Dr Mohamed Muizzu presented Zareer with his letter of appointment.

The oath of office was administered by Supreme Court Justice Mohamed Saleem, after which Zareer signed the official oath declaration and assumed his new responsibilities.

Zareer brings more than two decades of experience in taxation, finance, auditing, and corporate governance.

Since 2000, he has held a number of senior positions across both the public and private sectors.

Prior to his appointment, he served as Director of Finance (Group Shared Financial Services) and Group Chief Compliance Officer at Villa Shipping and Trading Company Pvt. Ltd.

He also briefly served as Chairman of Bank of Maldives between March and May 2024.

Earlier in his career, Zareer held the position of Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation, playing a key role in the country's tax administration and regulatory framework.

Academically, he holds a Bachelor of Accounting and a Master of Science in Finance from International Islamic University Malaysia.

He is also a Fellow Chartered Management Accountant (FCMA, CGMA) in the United Kingdom and a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) in Australia.

His appointment comes at a time when the government continues efforts to strengthen fiscal management and oversee key economic reforms.
