Former Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party, Fayyaz Ismail, has stated that the party remains the strongest political movement in the Maldives, while stressing that its continued influence depends on maintaining unity among its members and senior leadership.

Fayyaz made the remarks during a visit to F. Bilehdhoo as part of the ongoing MDP Chairperson election campaign, where he travelled alongside former President Mohamed Nasheed to meet party supporters and local members.

During the gathering, concerns were raised regarding the possibility of Nasheed distancing himself from the party if unsuccessful in the election.

Nasheed reportedly assured members that he would not leave the MDP even in the event of defeat, although he indicated he could choose to step back from active political involvement.

Addressing the matter further, Fayyaz emphasised that safeguarding the unity and future of the party is the collective responsibility of all members.

He acknowledged that previous efforts to reform internal party structures had not been pursued with sufficient determination, but stated that he is now committed to advancing reforms and rebuilding the party with renewed focus.

Fayyaz also stressed that neither former President Nasheed nor President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih should distance themselves from the party, highlighting the importance of retaining experienced leadership within the MDP.

He further noted that although attempts to divide the party had not succeeded in dismantling it, the MDP had nevertheless experienced a period of weakening in recent years.

Fayyaz stated that he intends to work toward restoring unity and preventing further fragmentation within the party moving forward.
