The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged the public to take precautionary measures as cases of infectious diseases rise ahead of the upcoming Eid holidays.

In a statement shared on Sunday, the agency reported an increase in illnesses including Dengue Fever, Influenza, and the Common Cold across the country.

The HPA also highlighted recently detected cases of Measles in the Greater Malé region, warning of the risk of further spread.

The agency noted that increased travel and social interaction during Eid including visits between households and gatherings in crowded public spaces could accelerate transmission.

Members of the public experiencing fever or respiratory symptoms have been advised to remain at home and avoid attending social events.

The HPA also recommended seeking medical care if symptoms worsen and wearing face masks when visiting healthcare facilities.

Individuals who are unwell were further advised to avoid using public transport.

In addition, the agency stressed that individuals undergoing testing for measles should remain in isolation until their results are confirmed.

The HPA outlined several preventive measures, including wearing masks in crowded indoor settings and while travelling, maintaining good personal hygiene, and ensuring routine vaccinations are up to date.

To reduce mosquito-borne transmission, the agency advised the use of repellents containing DEET, IR3535, or Icaridin, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating mosquito breeding sites around homes.

The advisory comes as large-scale Eid celebrations and public events are being planned across Malé and nearby areas.

Although the Maldives had previously achieved measles elimination status, several new cases have recently been reported, with more than 74 contacts identified in connection with confirmed infections.

The HPA also urged the public to rely on official sources for accurate health-related information.
