Maldives reaffirms support for One China Principle

The Government of Maldives has reiterated its firm commitment to the One China Principle, reaffirming its recognition of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing all of China.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government noted that this position has remained consistent since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and China.

The statement further referenced United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 and international law, under which Taiwan is regarded as part of the territory of the People’s Republic of China.

The government also underscored its intention to further strengthen its longstanding diplomatic relationship with China, highlighting the importance of continued engagement and cooperation.

Additionally, the Maldives expressed appreciation for China’s contributions to the country’s socio-economic development, noting that such support has played a significant role in national progress.

The statement added that the Maldives looks forward to expanding cooperation with China in ways that promote peace, stability, and mutual benefit.
