PNF backs joint opposition efforts led by three former Presidents
The People’s National Front (PNF), founded under the leadership of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has announced its full support for the decisions taken by the three opposition leaders former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and Yameen himself.
The decision was reached unanimously during the party’s third Senate meeting, reflecting a collective stance among members to cooperate with the opposition’s joint efforts.
In a statement, the PNF said its decision to align with the collaboration between the three former presidents was driven by concerns over the actions of the current administration.
The party emphasized that sovereignty lies with the people, but alleged that the government is operating outside the constitutional framework.
It raised concerns over what it described as executive interference in the judiciary, as well as undue influence over members of the People’s Majlis.
The statement further accused the administration of undermining parliamentary authority, weakening the independence of key state institutions, and eroding the system of checks and balances.
According to the PNF, the decentralization framework is also being compromised, posing a threat to principles of good governance.
Additionally, the party warned that the country is moving towards what it described as an “autocratic and oppressive rule,” alleging that the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is infringing on the fundamental rights guaranteed to citizens and disregarding their protection under the law.
