Criminal court sentences two journalists over court order violation
The Criminal Court has sentenced two journalists from the local media outlet Adhadhu to prison after finding them guilty of contempt of court.
Mohamed Shahuzaan was sentenced to 15 days’ imprisonment, while Leevan Ali Naseer received a 10-day jail term.
The court also imposed a fine of MVR 25,000 on each journalist.
The charges stem from alleged violations of a judicial order.
According to the court, Shahuzaan breached the directive through statements made during a press conference held yesterday.
Leevan, meanwhile, was found to have violated the same order through a news article he authored.
The case is linked to an ongoing investigation into a documentary produced by Adhadhu, which prompted the court to issue the directive in question.
In connection with the same matter, charges have also been filed against the outlet’s Chief Executive Officer, Hussain Fiyaz, and Managing Editor, Hassan Mohamed.
Their trial is scheduled to commence tomorrow.
