The governments of the Maldives and China have formalised an agreement to develop 500 social housing units in Malé City, marking a significant step toward addressing housing challenges in the capital.

The agreement was sealed through the signing of the “Minutes of the Meeting” on the sidelines of the High-Level Conference on Global Action for Shared Development, held in Beijing from April 21 to 22.

The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development confirmed that the project will be financed through interest-free assistance from the Chinese government, highlighting a continued commitment to shared development and strengthened bilateral cooperation.

The document was signed by Minister of State for Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Ibrahim Thoaam Mohamed, representing the Maldivian government. Liu Junfeng, Chairman of the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), signed on behalf of China.

The agreement follows extensive discussions held during the conference and reflects both countries’ ongoing efforts to expand cooperation in key development sectors.

During a related meeting, officials from both sides also reviewed progress on other China-funded development projects in the Maldives.

They reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safe, timely, and successful implementation of all joint initiatives.
