The Maldives Immigration has introduced a simplified process for extending tourist visas, significantly reducing approval times to within 48 hours.

Under the revised system, tourists who receive a 30-day visa on arrival can now apply for extensions more conveniently through the Imuga portal.

The move is aimed at improving accessibility and efficiency for visitors seeking to prolong their stay in the country.

The changes come in response to travel disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has resulted in flight cancellations and, in some cases, compelled tourists to extend their visits.

Authorities noted that tourism industry stakeholders had called for more flexible arrangements to better manage these challenges.

Previously, applicants were required to submit up to nine documents, including a copy of their passport and guesthouse registration, with processing times taking up to five days.

Under the new procedure, only a passport-sized photograph is needed, and approvals are typically granted within one to two days.

Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan stated that the streamlined process aligns with the government’s broader efforts to enhance public service delivery under the “Maldives 2.0” initiative.

From today, applicants can submit a passport-sized photo, and the extension will be granted within about a day or two. This aligns with the President’s Maldives 2.0 vision, where government departments are improving service delivery. If a person needs to extend their stay, that opportunity must be facilitated

The new system is anticipated to enhance convenience for travellers while streamlining administrative procedures.
