Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed has returned to the Maldives following the completion of his tenure as Secretary-General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF).

The CVF, established in 2009 during Nasheed’s presidency, was founded by the Maldives in collaboration with several climate-vulnerable nations.

The forum aims to amplify global awareness on the impacts of climate change, advocate for environmentally sustainable policies, and support member states in transitioning towards 100 percent renewable energy.

Nasheed had announced his decision to assume the role of Secretary-General on December 12, 2023, at which time he also declared a step back from active political engagement.

His departure from frontline politics came amid internal divisions within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which led to his resignation from both the party and his role as Speaker of the Parliament.

He later became briefly associated with The Democrats, a party formed by members of his political faction.

With tensions within the MDP now largely resolved, Nasheed has since rejoined the party.

He has also been entrusted with advisor role, contributing to the party’s strategic direction and internal management.
