Five members selected to oversee party affairs

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to transfer the management of the party to an interim committee comprising five senior leaders, amid efforts to stabilise internal dynamics.

According to party sources, the proposal will be presented to the MDP National Council, where a final decision is expected during a meeting scheduled for tonight.

A key feature of the proposal includes granting former President Mohamed Nasheed permanent membership in the party’s National Council.

The proposed five-member committee includes former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, Former President Nasheed, Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, and party President Abdulla Shahid.

The interim arrangement is intended to oversee party affairs until a new chairperson is formally elected.

The move comes at a time when the party has faced internal disagreements following recent political developments. However, Solih has stated that tensions within the MDP have now been resolved.

The discord reportedly stemmed from an incident during a post-election gathering, where supporters aligned with the current interim chairperson allegedly prevented Nasheed from addressing attendees, intensifying divisions within the party.
