Nasheed says voters reject government in nationwide polls
Former President Mohamed Nasheed said on Sunday that the Maldivian Democratic Party had secured a decisive victory over the government in the country’s latest elections.
In a post on X, Nasheed stated that the opposition MDP had achieved a strong win in the vote, adding that the outcome reflected widespread public rejection of the government across cities, most islands, and in the national referendum.
He also congratulated voters and candidates who took part in the electoral process.
Preliminary results from the council elections indicated that candidates representing the Maldivian Democratic Party were leading in several mayoral races, based on ballots counted so far.
