HDC orders shutdown of illegal laundromat in Hulhumalé
Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has ordered the suspension of an unauthorized laundromat operating from a residential apartment in Vinares Tower, Hulhumalé Phase 2.
The action follows the circulation of a video on social media showing an industrial scale laundry setup inside a flat allocated under the social housing scheme.
The footage revealed multiple washing machines, dryers, and ironing equipment installed within the unit.
HDC confirmed that it has launched an investigation into the matter and issued a notice instructing those involved to immediately cease operations.
The corporation stated that such activities violate regulations that prohibit commercial or industrial use of residential properties.
Authorities noted that businesses of this nature are only permitted in designated commercial zones, specifically in the eastern and southern areas of Hulhumalé.
The video also raised safety concerns, showing several gas cylinders reportedly used to power the equipment, along with claims that public elevators in the building were being used to transport laundry loads.
HDC stated that further action will be taken based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
