US envoy calls for stronger cooperation with Maldives
The United States has underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation with the Maldives, following a recent visit by its Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, Sergio Gor.
Gor made the remarks after completing a one-day trip to the Maldives, during which he held discussions with Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel and Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon.
The talks focused on bilateral relations as well as broader regional developments.
This year marks 60 years of relations between our nations and it is important that we identify areas of strategic importance and find ways to work together,
Gor tweeted
Gor, who also serves as the US Ambassador to India, highlighted the significance of the long-standing diplomatic relationship between the two countries and stressed the need to expand collaboration in key areas of mutual interest.
The visit drew heightened attention amid ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Addressing the matter earlier, President Dr. Muizzu stated that while the Maldives remains open to engagement with all countries except Israel, his administration would not permit Maldivian territory to be used in any foreign military conflict.
He also reiterated the country’s long-standing policy of neutrality and non-alignment in external military affairs.
