The Maldives has requested assistance from India to secure oil supplies amid ongoing disruptions in global energy markets.

The request was confirmed by Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, during a recent press briefing.

According to Jaiswal, the Maldives is among several neighbouring countries that have approached India for fuel support, with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh also seeking similar assistance.

The requests come at a time when global oil markets are experiencing uncertainty linked to escalating tensions in the Middle East involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.

Jaiswal noted that India already exports petroleum products to several neighbouring nations.

He highlighted that arrangements are currently underway to supply diesel to Bangladesh through the India–Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline and other mechanisms.

However, he added that India’s ability to supply fuel to neighbouring countries would depend on its domestic demand and the operational capacity of its refineries.

India's own requirements will also be factored in. We have received such requests from Sri Lanka and the Maldives as well

Meanwhile, Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Khaleel stated that the Maldivian government is actively exploring additional fuel supply sources in response to the evolving situation in the Middle East.

Khaleel, who chairs the Cabinet committee tasked with assessing the economic impact of the conflict, said the government is engaging with neighbouring countries and international partners to ensure a stable supply of fuel to the Maldives.

Global oil prices have recently risen amid concerns that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could be disrupted if regional tensions continue to escalate.
