Former Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi has urged Maldivian citizens to refrain from travelling abroad to take part in civil wars or insurgencies in other countries.

Speaking in an interview with the Indian news agency Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) , Mariya expressed concern over the growing tensions in the Middle East following recent military developments involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

She stressed that Maldivians should avoid becoming involved in conflicts abroad, particularly during a period of heightened geopolitical instability in the region.

Mariya recalled that during the peak of the Syrian Civil War, authorities were deeply concerned about Maldivians travelling to Syria to join the fighting.

According to her, the situation brought serious consequences, particularly for the families left behind.

She noted that the conflict created significant hardship for the women and children of those who travelled to participate in the war.

I do hope maldivians dont travel abroad for other conflicts elsewhere. we had a lot of worry when the syrian crisis was going on and a lot of maldivians traveled to syria to be a part of that civil war.

Mariya stated

Reflecting on that period, Mariya expressed hope that Maldivians would avoid repeating similar actions by becoming involved in other conflicts overseas.

In addition, Mariya raised concerns about the broader economic impact of escalating tensions in the Middle East.

She warned that instability in the region could drive up global oil prices, which would have direct consequences for the Maldives.

Given the country’s heavy reliance on imported fuel, she explained that rising fuel costs would likely lead to increases in the prices of goods and services across the Maldives.
