Maldives appeals for peace as Middle East crisis deepens
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives has issued a statement strongly condemning recent attacks carried out by Iran against several Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain.
In the statement, the Maldivian government expressed particular concern over incidents affecting civilian locations, including airports and oil facilities in the Gulf region.
The ministry described such attacks as a clear violation of international law and the principles outlined in the Geneva Conventions.
The Maldives government also voiced concern that the strikes against Gulf nations were carried out despite the absence of retaliatory actions from those countries.
At the same time, the government expressed deep concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East following military strikes launched by Israel and the United States against Iran.
The statement condemned these attacks as well, highlighting reports of strikes on civilian sites, including a girls’ school that resulted in more than one hundred civilian casualties.
It also referenced damage caused by attacks on hospitals and oil facilities.
According to the ministry, these developments have further intensified tensions across the Gulf and the wider Middle East region.
The government warned that continued violence could undermine prospects for peace and stability.
The Maldives called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and implement an immediate ceasefire.
The government also urged the international community to strengthen diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring peace, stability and security in the region.
