Police to investigate Waheed–Epstein allegations if complaint filed: Minister Ihusaan
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan has stated that the police will investigate allegations concerning former President Mohamed Waheed’s reported ties with Jeffrey Epstein if a formal complaint is submitted to the authorities.
The issue has drawn public attention following disclosures regarding Waheed’s past interactions with Epstein, who was sexually abusing minors, producing child sexual exploitation material, and blackmailing victims.
Waheed resigned from his role as Special Envoy to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu after documents detailing his association with Epstein surfaced publicly.
The resignation took place on February 3, one day after the documents were leaked.
President Dr. Muizzu recently confirmed that he had requested Waheed to step down from the position.
Responding to a question at a press conference today about whether the police had initiated an investigation into the matter, Minister Ihusaan said that no case has so far been formally reported to the authorities.
To date, no person or entity has filed a criminal allegation or complaint with the police regarding this matter. Therefore, the authorities have not launched an inquiry independently
He explained
The Minister emphasized that the police would act without exception if a report is filed or if there are grounds to believe that a criminal offense may have been committed.
The police will investigate any case where there is reason to believe a crime has occurred, or if a formal report is submitted, without exception for any individual
He added
Following the controversy surrounding the alleged association, a statement issued by Waheed’s office maintained that his interactions with Epstein had been strictly official in nature.
The statement also asserted that neither the former President nor any member of his family had been involved in Epstein’s criminal activities.
It further expressed regret over having had such interactions, particularly in light of what later became known about Epstein’s conduct.
