The Maldives has been selected as the Official Host Country for ITB Berlin 2027, placing the island nation at the center of one of the world’s largest and most influential travel trade fairs.

The agreement was formalized during ITB Berlin 2026, with the signing ceremony taking place at the Maldives’ exhibition stand.

The agreement was signed by Ibrahim Shiuree, Chief Executive Officer of Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), and Mario Tobias, Chief Executive Officer of Messe Berlin.

Tobias welcomed the Maldives’ return to the role, noting that the country had previously served as host nation a decade ago.

He said the renewed partnership underscores both the global significance of ITB Berlin and the Maldives’ continued rise as a leading international tourism destination.

The Maldives, known for its more than 1,000 islands, turquoise lagoons, coral reefs, and white-sand beaches, remains one of the world’s most sought-after long-haul travel destinations.

The country offers a wide range of tourism experiences, including luxury resorts, boutique hotels, guesthouse tourism on local islands, diving, water sports, wellness retreats, and cultural activities.

Officials also highlighted that sustainability remains a key priority within the country’s tourism strategy, with various initiatives focused on protecting marine ecosystems while supporting the livelihoods of local communities.

VMC Managing Director Ibrahim Shiuree said the opportunity to serve as host country would provide a major platform to showcase the Maldives’ diverse tourism offerings to travelers and industry stakeholders worldwide.

The announcement follows President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to Berlin, where he met with German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The visit reinforced the Maldives’ diplomatic and strategic ties with Germany as well as with the broader international community.

The Maldivian government has also declared “Visit Maldives Year 2027,” a national campaign aimed at strengthening global awareness of the destination through marketing campaigns, travel events, and digital promotions.

As the official host country, the Maldives will organize the opening gala of ITB Berlin on 15 March 2027, while a series of cultural performances, tourism showcases, and networking events will take place from 16 to 18 March.

Organizers note that the event will provide a valuable opportunity for the Maldives to strengthen partnerships with key European markets and promote its tourism sector to the global travel industry.
