Velana International Airport (VIA) has witnessed the cancellation of eight scheduled flights tonight, leaving approximately 1,400 tourists temporarily stranded amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The disruptions follow the recent military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran, which have caused instability throughout the region and led to widespread airspace closures.

Airlines operating through Middle Eastern hubs have been forced to suspend operations, affecting international travel to and from the Maldives.

In response, Thoriq Ibrahim,Minister of Tourism and Environment visited VIA to personally oversee the situation.

He confirmed that while some stranded travellers have been transported back to their resorts, coordinated efforts are ongoing to ensure safe departure arrangements for those still at the airport.

To accommodate passengers, facilities have been set up at the former domestic terminal of VIA, providing temporary lodging and essential services.

The Minister praised Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) for its role in coordinating the response.

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has also issued a travel advisory for outbound travellers, urging passengers bound for Middle Eastern destinations to closely monitor updates from airlines and tour operators before heading to the airport.

Passengers are advised to check flight status via official airline websites, allow additional time for arrangements, and follow guidance from tour operators.

Authorities warned that the situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate rapidly, with leaders from the United States and Israel reportedly targeting Iranian leadership.

Should these developments escalate, further disruptions to air travel and regional stability are expected.
