Maldives announces candidature for UN Human Rights Council 2028–2030 term

The Maldives has formally announced its candidature for election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2028–2030 term, reaffirming its commitment to contributing constructively to the Council’s mandate.

The announcement was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdulla Khaleel, while delivering the Maldives’ national statement at the General Debate of the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday. 

In his address, the Minister reiterated the Maldives’ steadfast commitment to the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, emphasizing their continued relevance in addressing contemporary global challenges.

He underscored the importance of strengthened multilateral cooperation and principled engagement to preserve the credibility and impartiality of the international human rights system.

Dr Khaleel highlighted the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to reinforce democratic governance, strengthen the rule of law, and enhance institutional accountability.

He also pointed to progress in anti-corruption initiatives and measures aimed at supporting vulnerable and marginalized groups, including women entrepreneurs, persons with disabilities, and children.

The Minister further noted the Maldives’ continued engagement with international human rights mechanisms, including the completion of its fourth Universal Periodic Review, and reiterated the country’s advocacy for greater participation of Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in the Council’s work.

Concluding his statement, Dr Khaleel reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to upholding the universality, indivisibility, and interdependence of all human rights, both nationally and internationally, as the country seeks to play a constructive role within the Human Rights Council for the 2028–2030 term.
