Dengue and Diarrhea cases surge across Maldives: HPA
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) reports a sharp rise in dengue fever and diarrhea cases last month, urging immediate hygiene measures and medical attention amid holiday travel and Umrah pilgrim returns.
January statistics show 647 dengue cases up from 424 in December and a dramatic increase from 103 in January 2025 and 69 in December 2024.
Diarrhea reports jumped to 7792 cases from 3405 the prior month, while common colds rose to 34840 from 29461.
HPA attributes the spike to school holidays and increased travel, which fuel respiratory infections, influenza, dengue, and gastrointestinal illnesses.
Influenza bucked the trend, dropping to 96 cases from 152.
The agency warns at-risk groups to avoid crowded areas, prioritize personal hygiene, and seek prompt care for symptoms, especially mosquito-borne diseases during peak transmission.
