Maldives make history with SAFF Futsal Championship victory
The Maldives have secured the championship title at the inaugural SAFF Futsal Championship, emerging as the leading futsal nation in South Asia after an unbeaten run in the tournament.
The national team was officially presented with the trophy during a special ceremony held after the conclusion of the final match of the competition.
Maldives dominated the tournament by winning all six of their matches.
Their campaign began with a convincing 7–1 victory over Pakistan, followed by a 6–1 win against Bangladesh.
The team continued their impressive form with a 5–0 triumph over India and a narrow 2–1 victory against Nepal.
In their fifth match, Maldives defeated Bhutan 4–1, a result that secured the championship title with one match still remaining.
The team went on to conclude the tournament with a 5–2 win in their final fixture, finishing at the top of the standings with a perfect 18 points from six matches.
The Maldives also recorded the highest number of goals scored in the competition.
Team captain Mohamed Imran emerged as the tournament’s top scorer, netting nine goals.
Defensively, the Maldivian side delivered a strong performance, conceding just six goals throughout the tournament the lowest among all participating teams.
As the first-ever winners of the SAFF Futsal Championship, the Maldives have made history, marking a significant milestone for the nation and regional futsal.
