Seaplane expansion will boost tourism and connectivity: Minister Ameen
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has announced significant progress in expanding the Maldives’ national seaplane network, emphasizing its importance in improving regional connectivity and supporting economic growth in the northern atolls.
Speaking during the inauguration of seaplane services to Noonu Atoll Velidhoo, Minister Ameen said the government is committed to strengthening the domestic transport network particularly seaplane links to enhance tourism accessibility and general inter-island mobility.
The minister noted that under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, seaplane operations are now active at two regional hubs, with Velidhoo established as the third operational base.
He added that plans are under way to extend services to additional islands with services beginning to Thoddoo next month.
Describing the national seaplane initiative as a transformative project, Minister Ameen said it will play a key role in boosting local tourism, creating jobs, and stimulating regional economies, particularly in areas that were previously underserved by domestic transport links.
