President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has established the Maldives Digital Service (MDS) and abolished the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT), according to a directive issued by the President’s Office on Tuesday.

The newly formed agency will operate under the administrative oversight of the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology.

The establishment of the Maldives Digital Service and the dissolution of NCIT were carried out in accordance with Article 116(a) of the Constitution of the Republic of Maldives, the President’s Office confirmed.

The move follows Cabinet discussions held on 25 September 2025 as part of the government’s Digital-First Nation agenda.

The Maldives Digital Service has been designated as the lead executive body responsible for implementing the Maldives 2.0 Roadmap 2025–2028: Journey to Digital Transformation.

Under its mandate, the Maldives Digital Service will take over all responsibilities previously managed by NCIT, while also leading the nationwide implementation of the digital transformation roadmap.
